You can’t tell me that transforming culture is not important for the mission of the church. Apparently, in other parts of the world, culture has such a huge impact that it can’t be avoided or shunned, but other religious groups are seeking to “redeem” it from their own world view (First Saudi Arabian music video). This reminded me of what a buddy of mine who served in Iraq recounted to me. He said that when he was over there as a military soldier, he would be flocked by little Iraqui kids who wanted him to play Brittney Spears on his guitar (which if you want to hear two really great covers of one of her songs check out how Tristan Prettyman and Nickel Creek did it). Even in what seems to be remote parts of the world, or least likely to listen to US Teen-bop music, culture has a way of influencing people. The job of the church is not to completely endorse, nor completely shun any part of the culture, but to redeem it and realign it all to the purpose for which it exists – the glory of God and the enjoyment of His creation.
